Fish molee/Fish molly/Kerala style fish stew

Fish molee is a kerala style fish curry similar to fish stew in its preparation. Its mildly spiced and flavored with coconut milk. This goes well with chappati, appam or rice.

  • Big onion - 1 medium size
  • Green chilli - 2
  • Coconut milk (thick) - 1 cup
  • Coconut milk (thin) - 1 cup
  • Pepper powder - 3 tsp

  • Red chilli powder - 2 tsp
  • Coriander powder - 2 tsp
  • Ginger - 1 medium sliced into thin strips
  • Garlic - 4 sliced
  • Curry leaves - 2 sprigs
  • Salt
  • Coconut oil
Preparation:
  • Clean the fish piece and marinate it with 1 tsp pepper powder, 1 tsp turmeric powder, 2 tsp chilli powder and salt. Keep it for minimum 20 mins.
  • Heat some oil in a pan and fry the fish pieces lightly. Flip in between. Once done keep aside.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add sliced onions, green chillies, curry leaves, sliced ginger and garlic. Saute till the onion becomes translucent.
  • Add 1 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp pepper powder and 2 tsp coriander powder. Saute till raw smell goes.
  • Add thin coconut milk and salt. Combine well. Let it boil.
  • Add the fried fish pieces.
  • Add sliced tomatoes over the curry. Let it boil for 2 mins.
  • Lastly add thick coconut milk. Swirl and combine well.
  • Check salt and spice level at this stage and add if needed. Turn off the flame and enjoy.
Notes:
  • I used Neymeen/King fish for this one. You ca use any fish.
  • Take care not to mix with spoon. Fish may break. Just swirl the pan to combine well.
  • If you want to make it more spicy you may add more green chillies or pepper powder.
