Shappu style chicken curry (Toddy shop style chicken curry)



       Kallu shappu is famous for its various spicy and delicious dishes. I have heard a lot about the extraordinary, savour and mouth-watering recipes of Kerala toddy shop foods and its preparations. It is highly spiced and looks lively but the taste is awesome. Coconut bits with chicken pieces will give a perfect flavour. If u are a person who loves to have spicy curries then get ready to try this... This curry is our all-time favourite. So guys try and cook this authentic shappu style chicken Curry and enjoy with boiled rice or kappa....


Ingredients

·         Chicken - 1 kg (Cut into medium sized pieces)
·         Onion ( finely chopped ) -2 big
·         Green chilli (Split lengthwise)) -2
·         Ginger paste - 1 tbsp
·         Garlic paste -  1tbsp
·         Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
·         Pepper powder - 2 tbsp
·         Kashmiri chilli powder - 1 tsp
·         Coriander powder - 1 tbsp
·         Chicken masala powder - 1 tbsp
·         Coconut bits(1 inch size) - 3/4 cup
·         Curry leaves- 2 or 4 sprigs
·         Tomato - 2  medium sized
·         Cardamom - 2 or 4 crushed
·         Bay leaves - 2   
·         Mustard - 2 tsp
·         Cooking oil (preferably coconut oil)

For marination

·         Pepper powder - 1/2 tsp
·         Garam masala - 1 tsp
·         Kashmiri chilli powder - 1/2 tsp
·         Turmeric powder - 1/2 tsp
·         Salt to taste

Preparation:
  1. Clean the chicken pieces and apply the ingredients under marination. Keep it aside for 30 mins.
  2. Grind the tomato to a smooth paste and keep aside.
  3. Heat oil in a pan. Add coconut bits. Fry it till it turns golden brown. Remove and keep it to strain.
  4. Add mustard into the remaining oil in the pan. When it starts to splutter add ginger and garlic paste. Saute for few mins till raw smell goes.
  5. Add green chilli, curry leaves, chopped onions, crushed cardamoms and bay leaf. Saute it till it till onions become translucent.
  6. Add turmeric powder, kashmir chilli powder, coriander powder, pepper powder and chicken masala powder.
  7. Saute it till raw smell goes. Then add tomato paste and combine  well with other ingredients. Saute for another 5 mins.
  8. Add  marinated chicken and fried coconut bits to this and combine well. You may add some water if necessary. Cover and cook until chicken is done and the gravy is thick.
  9. Remove from flame and serve hot with rice or roti.
Notes:
1.       You can adjust the quantity of kashmiri chilli powder and pepper powder according to your spice level
